This series of projects explored the challenges of extreme heat and the development of a coordinated response for the City of Vancouver. Across three related assignments, I examined the impacts of extreme heat on vulnerable populations, developed a proposed policy implementation approach, and designed a public engagement strategy to inform how the program could be effectively implemented. Through this work and my broader experience, I have developed an interest in the effects of climate change on vulnerable populations and the role of planning and policy in supporting community resilience.
The first project involved a policy analysis of extreme heat, examining the issue, its impacts on vulnerable populations, and the policy considerations involved in developing an effective municipal response. The second built on this research through the development of a policy implementation plan for a proposed Extreme Heat Response Program, translating policy considerations into a practical framework for implementation.
The third project focused on public engagement and program implementation. I developed the project’s engagement goals, stakeholder analysis, communication plan, equity and inclusion strategy, engagement methods, and data collection and evaluation framework. The proposed approach incorporated a World Café-style workshop, targeted outreach, anonymous feedback opportunities, and a public “What We Heard” report to create a transparent feedback loop between residents and program implementation.
Together, these projects demonstrate my ability to connect policy research, implementation planning, and community engagement while considering equity and the experiences of populations disproportionately affected by climate-related impacts.
